Day 2: Get out of the closet

Alright, Round Two!

So for most people Sunday is the day of rest. For me, Sunday is Oh-crap-where-did-the-weekend-go-I-have-an-essay-due-Monday Day. It basically consists of me getting up and going to the library for five hours before getting a quick bite to eat and finishing all of the rest of my homework so I can finally watch the series finale of Doctor Who.

But naturally I had to pick out a good outfit as well.

So,

I don't like studying in a baggy pair of sweatpants (actually, I don't even own a pair of sweatpants). Rather, I feel far more motivated in something that is comfortable and also adorable.
I have this thing for skinny jeans-I don't wear any other kind. I have about 7 or 8 pairs in various colors (my goal is to have a shade in every color of the rainbow). Skinny jeans are great because they can be as casual or dressy as you want, depending on the shoes and top you match them with. I usually go for the casual look, as you can tell by the return of the boots and the sweater.

Oh, and the jeans are from Urban Outfitters. They were a splurge buy (okay, let's face it, my Mother's splurge buy), but I had been looking for purple pants for a while, and let me tell you, they are not easy to come by. What kind of world are we living in where I can not find purple pants?

Anyway, I love them dearly and I'm certain you all will be seeing them again some time this month.

The sweater is once again a Forever 21 top (I promise not all of my clothes are from there. They are just relatively cheap.) I have this thing for Native American/Indian patterns on fabrics; they are so cozy and make me think of cold weather and bundling up and drinking cider. And considering the weather has suddenly decided to drop by twenty degrees, I figured today was the day to bundle up (although I never did get any cider).

Now for the interesting part: I'm wearing a sports bra. Yep, that's right. This top is not quite off-the-shoulder, but it's too lose to wear a regular bra without seeing the straps. Word of advice, Ladies: Nobody wants to see your bra straps. Invest in a strapless bra, or else go with the sports bra technique. Plus, sports bras are typically more comfortable than regular bras anyway, so it's like a double win.

I know what you're probably thinking. It's a fashion blog and she's just talking about bra straps.

I promise that this upcoming week will get better. I looked through some of my clothes today and I already have some really great ideas.

I remember reading a blog post that Evanna Lynch (Luna Lovegood in the HP films) wrote for the HP Alliance once. She talked about how the world today teaches us that calling attention to ourselves will only make us appear materialistic and self-centered. She countered this view by saying how important it is to love yourself, and to do whatever it takes to feel confident. Her secret was picking out a great outfit that made her feel ready to face the world.

I'm the same way. Sometimes, I don't want to speak up in class or I don't say what I'm thinking until the moment has passed (unintentional rhyme!). I find that when I pick out a great outfit, an outfit that really reflects me, then I'm far more confident, more outgoing, and more likely to be myself than pretend to be someone else.

I was talking to my friend the other day about how I consider myself a "closet badass". In other words, I often want to be that girl who says something witty, or knows all the right answers, or just seems comfortable with herself in the most uncomfortable situation. My friend responded by saying I already was a badass, and that I had been the day I decided to wear crazy colored jeans.

I never thought about it before, but what I choose to wear really does reflect how people see me. I don't mean as rich or poor or preppy or gothic, but who I am as a person. My purple pants say, "hey, that girl is secure enough with herself to wear something unique, something strange, something that most people wouldn't dare to try on in the first place."

A good outfit gives me confidence, and I bet it could do the same for you. Who knows? Maybe you'll find you were a badass all along.
